Taipei: Flying EVA Air [Oct 2013]

Some pics from my trip to Taipei and HK back in October.  I was suppose to head into China too but my visa hit a snafu so I went haha.  Been awhile since the last time I went back either Taipei or HK, so my goal was to eat as much as possible during any downtime, especially in HK, since my schedule there was pretty hectic.

Also, for the first time in over 10 years, I flew EVA Air!  My family's always flew China Airline but the SkyTeam Alliance isn't really for me, and now that EVA's with Star Alliance (United), I decided to earn some mileage and check EVA out.

In-flight menu.  I flew Premium Economy so the seats were like the old old business class products.  Just a little wider and more leg room than regular Economy.

Pork chop with minced pork rice.  I gotta say, not too shabby!  Wine was pretty good, and I'm a sucker for Milano cookies haha.  Especially dark chocolate!

Pork chop.  Flavor's pretty good.

Braised pork shank.

For dessert, kept the Milan cookies, and went for the Haagen-Dazs Vanilla.

Breakfast on the other hand... was pretty horrible.  I hate porridge.  The chicken was so bland too.

2013-10-22 05.16.23
Added some fish sung (shredded dry fish) to make it better.

2013-10-22 09.24.32
This lady also ruined my appetite for breakfast.  She didn't eat but kept rubbing her foot with the lotion the airline provided.  Literally she rubbed it for 15+ minutes during service.

When I landed, it was drizzling, warm, and the air so thick you can almost chew it.  Felt good to be back after so long haha.

Vancouver: Granville Island Public Market

Sorry for the lack of updates!  Been busy lately and I really wanted to make sure I had free time for this post since I had a ton of fun exploring Granville Island.  I'm a sucker for these sort of public market or farmer's market.  Usually you can find a lot of interesting and unique things that you can't find anywhere else, so I always try to make an effort to visit a local farmer's market if I can when visiting a new place, even if it is one as touristy as the Granville Island Public Market.

granville island public market
Since the market opens fairly early and we were short on time, we woke up around 8am, checked out, took the cab to Granville Island, and started to explore the place.  It wasn't packed but plenty of people already.  Of course another gloomy morning.

produce
It reminds me of a smaller Pike Place Market in Seattle.  Lots of local and organic fresh produce.  Not cheap at all O_o.

seafood
Seafood.  Again, not cheap, but the quality of the fish here does look amazing!

seafood
This particular vendor had lots fishes that Asians love haha.

crowd
Starting to get crowded around 9am.  Lots of tourists, but plenty of locals as well shopping for the holidays.

butcher
One of the butcher shops.  There carry different wild games you don't really see in the States.  I remember seeing a pound of rib eye steak for over $20CAD!  By this point, I have decided that you must be fairly well-off to be buying your grocery here..

stuart's
Stuart's, one of the first place we stopped by, cause we could actually afford it :P

cookies & pastries
Variety of pastries and cookies!

our breakfast
Since the three of us didn't have breakfast yet, we decided to each get something.

chocolate croissants
I went with my usual Chocolate Croissant.  Chocolate-y, but not as flaky as I'd thought.

fruit
Alice's fruit pastry.  I actually like this better than the chocolate croissant.

fruit
Strawberries on the other end!

cinnamon roll
Calvin's cinnamon roll.  Big!  Probably amazing if it was fresh out of the oven.

lee's donuts
The chocolate croissant wasn't enough and as soon as I saw a donut shop, I had to get something.  Gotta eat donuts in every city!

donuts
Asian owned!  They had all these Asian flavored donuts.  Very interesting.

order
Breakfast round two.

mango & melon
I decided to go with the mango filled and the melon cake!  Wasn't a fan of the melon cake donut since the melon flavor was really light.

mango filling
Mango-filled donut was awesome though!  Just like your normal jelly donut, except this has a mango custard/cream!  Tastes just like your Asian mango candy haha.

fresh pasta
Variety of fresh raviolis!  If we stayed longer and the hotel had a kitchen, definitely all over this.

charcuterie
Crazy packed vendor selling charcuterie.

house smoked
They have all these crazy house-smoked items!  Wanted to buy a few slices just to try but the line was ridiculous.  I guess many were buying it as gifts to families and for Christmas dinners.

more cheese
Cheese vendor.

cheese
Cheeses.  Some imported, some local.

florist
Of course, gotta have a florist at a market.

cafe
After devouring the two donuts, I needed a drink.  Decided to get something from Petit Ami.

menu
Fair trade, organic, estate grown coffee!  Went for the latte.

latte
Latte.  Nothing too fancy.

found the maple gummy bears!
The whole time we were in Canada, we were searching for maple flavored gummy bears.  Didn't really know if it existed but we figured there was a very good chance that they do sell it somewhere.  Finally found it at the market!

found it!
Calvin super happy with his maple-flavored gummies!  Tasted odd though :P

fresh wasabi
Fresh wasabi!  $22/100g meant that is is roughly $110/lb of the spicy stuff o_O

vendors
Shot of the back of the market.

stock specialist
Want to buy stock to bring home so you can lie to your family and friends about how you spent hours making the soup?  Stock Market is your best friend then!

Tea
Before we left, I stopped by Granville Island Tea Company to buy some loose-leaf tea as gifts.  Learned a bit about all the different type of teas.

Tea
Decided on the organic Assam and the Formosa Oolong as gifts.  Granville Island Tea Company also sell chai tea, in addition to the loose leaf and the guy helping me out said that the organic Assam was the type of tea they use as base!  As for the oolong tea, Formosa oolong tea is quite common, and my family gets a lot from Taiwan, but I gotta say, the quality from Granville Island Tea Company's pretty good!  Even my mom was impressed.

In the back of the market, in addition to more food vendors, there were a lot of vendors selling paintings, crafts, soap, jewelry, and anything that people hand make.  You can also get a great view of Vancouver so we spent a bit of time outdoors taking pictures.  Since we were short on time and wanted to grab ramen in Vancouver, we did a quick walk and window-shopped through the rest of Granville, then took a cab back to downtown area for lunch.

New York: Carnegie Delicatessen, Joe's Shanghai, Milk Bar

I think Halloween was the day I ate the most for this trip in New York.  Again, woke up late, but once we left the apartment, it just was non-stop eating.  Not that I mind it at all :P

Originally we wanted burgers for lunch so we stopped by Shake Shack since Edwin never had it but the line was just ridiculous.  Then we tried to go to the Parker Meridien for the "secret burger" but the whole block was closed off due to the damaged crane off a high rise caused by the storm.  That pretty much ended our burger quest so we started thinking about alternatives.

Super crazy line.  Lower Manhattan was still dark so a lot of people ventured north for food.  Lots of tourists stuck too, so they all come to Shake Shack!

Didn't know where to go after we were told Parker Meridien was off limits, Edwin and I decided to grab a "snack" at the world famous Carnegie Delicatessen!  Carnegie is one of those old school delis in NY that's famous for their sandwiches.  At Carnegie though, portion is EVERYTHING.  It's funny, cause I've actually had the Carnegie Delicatessen located inside Treasure Island in Vegas, and I thought it was whatevers, but man, the actual location was way better!

to go bag
Our sandwich in the to-go bag.  Originally, I was gonna get their famous superstacked pastrami sandwich since I was sharing with Edwin, but we saw someone dining in and that sandwich... was waaaay to big.  We just wanted a snack so we wussed out :P

pastrami
Pastrami sandwich on rye.  It's not handcarved in front of you, but it is still made right on the spot.  Machine cut so every piece is even thickness.  Funny thing was our sandwich was made by an old Chinese man and he kept on egging us to get the superstacked!  It was twice the amount of pastrami..

pastrami
I actually like the pastrami here.  Juicy and peppery.  The mustard here is also really good.  Still, not as good as Katz's.

eating outside
Edwin and I eating it on a newspaper dispenser since we didn't want to eat in haha.

Afterwards, we decided to go get some xiao long bao (soup dumplings) at Joe's Shanghai.  Original location is in Chinatown and they are famous for the dumplings.  It's sorta unfair, but I compare all xiao long bao to Ding Tai Fung just because I grew up eating it.

Soy sauce + vinegar.  They didn't bring us the actual vinegar until I asked.

crab roe xiao long bao
Crab Meat Xiao Long Bao.

xlb
It was actually pretty good.  The juices inside the bao was briny and very tasty.  The skin's a little too thick though.

regular xlb
The regular xiao long bao.  I think if I had the regular instead of the crab first, I would've liked it a lot more.

shanghai noodles
Shanghai Noodles.  Stir fried pork, veggies, and noodles in soy sauce.  I hate how we had to pay so much for something I used to get for less than $5 haha.

Afterwards, walked towards Momofuku Milk Bar for some dessert.  A few days ago, we were gonna visit the East Village location but that area's totally flooded now.  On the first floor of Ma Peche, which is another Momofuku restaurant, they sell desserts and quick snack items from Momofuku's menu.

They sell an assortment of cookies.

Corn cookies.  Made with corn meal?

Compost Cookie.  It has chocolate chip, potato chips, cornflakes... pretty much everything in one cookie.

Want your milk to taste sweet like the milk after you eat cereal?  Well, they sell Cereal Milk mixes here!  Genius.

crack pies
Their infamous Crack Pie sitting in the cold display.

What is Crack Pie made of?  Just sugar, eggs, and butter.

Somebody took a bite before I could take a picture of it haha.  It was oddly good though for being so simple.  The pie crust was the best part!

3 cookies for $6.  Pricey.

cookies!
I only got to eat the Compost cookie.  I left the rest at Jimmy's when I left haha.

We decided to do a bit of sightseeing and went to Rockefeller Center.  Again, Edwin's never been before and we even thought about going to the Top of the Rock, but it was so damn expensive.  At least I've been up already.

rockefeller rink
Rockefeller Rink is open!  Not like in LA where people outdoor ice skate in t-shirts and shorts haha.

rockefeller
Rockefeller Building.

menu that day
We went to the basement where all the restaurants and shops were since Janice wanted a hot chocolate form Jacques Torres.  Jimmy and I stopped by the Blue Bottle at Rockefeller.

iced coffee
Iced Yirgacheffe coffee.  Yirgacheffe is a fair trade coffee bean from Ethiopia and it's a little darker than what I usually order, the New Orleans iced coffee.  Was very restless after just 3 sips.  Too weak with caffeine haha.

After our little stop at Rockefeller, we made our way towards Central Park, checked out the cool looking Apple Store, and shopped at Uniqlo before we went to Yakitori Totto for our actual dinner that day!
